What is with my XBOX 360 Controller?

okay so when i played black ops, the cross hairs the screen just keep moving slow to the left.(P.S Its a wired controller). this is the second time doing this and the first time i ended up smashing my controller. so can you tell me how to fix it before i buy a new one?
